As I strive to wear a different pair of trainers every day in 2014 in aid of Alzheimer’s Research UK, I turn to a pair that were trendy at the turn of the millennium…
Got a touch of the blues today. Which is better than the poor Sontaran inside his spaceship here, who’s got a touch of the black and blues.
These are a pair of Nike Air Presto Faze trainers circa 2001. That was the year that these neoprene Nike slip-ons were all the rage until a stupidly wide and increasingly-vile selection of colours and patterns made sure they were a flash-in-the-pan trend. The Air Presto range survives to this day (not the Faze design, though), but it’s not the ubiquitous street wear it was back in 2001/2002. And I still reckon this two-tone blue combination was the best of the lot, never bettered.
They’re also unique amongst my collection of trainers in being the only pair not to have a show size – they came in small, regular, large and extra large – like condoms for feet. Well, you know what they say about what you can tell from the size of a man’s feet. (My pair are mediums… ahem.)
For a trainer that also looks like a case of style over substance, they’re also remarkably comfy and durable. These have been immersed in the sea just off the Great Barrier Reef ,and served me well in a couple of 10k runs as well as many treadmill sessions. You can tell I’m fond of ’em, can’t you?
They’re also very, very blue.
I was interviewed on BBC Radio Wiltshire yesterday by a very enthusiastic – and seemingly genuinely interested – presenter called Marie Lennon. Afraid I might have come across as a bit of a loon who was just trying to build-up his trainer collection on the sly (forgot to mention that I’m returning/selling/auctioning any on-loan trainers).
Still, I got to some great publicity for Alzheimer’s Research UK, so it was worthwhile on that level. I’ve decided that raising awareness about the charity is just as important as raising money, which is why I make no apologies mentioning that despite the backing of Terry Pratchett, Alzheimer’s charities in the UK remain seriously underfunded, yet £20 will go towards an hour’s worth of research. So please donate (see below)!
