A treasure hunt turns up a real find in the latest installment of the 365 days of trainers charity challenge.
Borrowed Steve Gotobed’s Nike Air Tailwinds today and set forth on a word wide search for treasure. If Indy had worn these beauties he’d have had no trouble dodging that giant pinball.
The Nike Tailwinds have a long and glorious history that stretches back to 1977 when aerospace technology specialist Frank Rudy approached Nike with the idea of putting an air pocket inside the sole of a trainer.
Within a year, Nike had introduced the first trainers with the now common air pocket feature – the Tailwind. It was released in limited quantities in Hawaii ahead of the 1978 Honolulu Marathon. Next thing you know, everybody wants a pair, and a legend is born. Nike Tailwind trainers hit the mass market in 1979 and updates of the design have been coming ever since.
Steve’s pair are actually a re-release of the Nike Tailwind 92 that came out in 2008, called Nike Tailwind 92 Retro (the main difference seems to be the heel as far as I can tell). And I like ’em so much he may have a tough time getting them back. But that’s the rules of this challenge. All loaners are returned, auctioned or shoe banked.
And don’t forget, this is all for charity. Details on how to sponsor me below. It’s a very worthwhile cause!
Talking of which, in my efforts to spread the word, I’ve got an interview with The Bath Chronicle later today (contact lenses in; remember not to suint). As I apparently live too far out of Bath for their photographer to come to me (I cycle in to work most days, remember, so how far can it be?) they asked me to bring some trainers in to work for the shoot. This shot of my bag today makes me look like some international footwear smuggler.
Usual sign off:
Current total: £300 (three days now without a new donation… come on, someone, break the drought and be a hero)
