The kindest thing to say about today’s pair of trainers in the 365-day challenge is, “Worn in…”
The trash compactor is back for a pair of Converse that have been well and truly trashed. If I were an estate agent I might describe them as possessing a unique air conditioning system, multiple aspect views and easy access to water supplies. In other words, they’re full of holes and you wouldn’t want to wear them in the rain. The dianoga seems to like them; maybe they smell like home!
Today’s pair have been donated by Dominic Carter, who came to SFX on work experience and, though he’s back in Brighton now, has since become one of the biggest supporters of this charity challenge (strange man). And, to be fair, he’s entered into the spirit of the thing as I originally thought it would play out. I’ve been lucky so far in that people have been loaning and donating some really, nice, new, shiny trainers (and believe me, I’m not complaining). But I expected, back when I started this, that I’d be getting more “seen better days” pairs people found at the back of the cupboard.
And these ones don’t actually whiff (much); that was just for the dianoga gag… Honest. And hey, they’re tatty old Cons. I can just pretend I’m a floppy-haired student again.
Dom went one further and made sure there was a sci-fi connection by stuffing a Dalek inside one shoe. Unfortunately, he came apart in the post, and at first, all I found was the head, which I first thougt was some weird Godfather-style threat. This morning, though, as I was putting the trainers on, my toes were crushed against the rest of the Dalek, who’s now in the workshop being welded back together.
And, yeah, the photo at the top of the page was another pair prepped on Sunday. But here’s a quick snap of me in the office taken a few minutes ago to prove that these are today’s trainers of choice.
Saw RoboCop last night. Embargoed from revealing anything until tomorrow. But it’s certainly not a load of old Crocs, if you get my drift.
Will be spending much of the rest of the day in Westeros.
See you tomorrow. And follow Dom’s lead!
Current total: £435 (another tenner yesterday!)
