Day 60: The Trainers That Time Forgot

In the mid ’90s these were mammoth, but who remembers them now? The latest in my attempt to wear a different pair of trainers every day in 2014 for charity…

Back in the mid ’90s, for a brief period of a year or so, Vans Lampins were everywhere. Every time you switched on TV some yoof presenter was sporting a pair, and they were especially loved by Big Breakfast presenters for some reason (Chris Evans and Rick Adams being their main champions). You could almost guarantee that at least one member of any band playing live on The Word would be wearing Lampins and they reached near critical mass in that skating area next to the National Film Institute on London’s South Bank.

They came in various colours, but most popularly in two-tone; light and dark blue, or light and dark green, or light and dark brown. And they were incredibly comfy, almost more like slippers.

Then suddenly, almost overnight, like the dinosaurs, they vanished. And as with the dinosaurs, it’s not entirely clear why, though an asteroid hitting Earth is an unlikely explanation. Maybe it was just overexposure?

It’s odd, though, because the simple, clean design seems custom-built for endurance and constant modification (and occasional re-issues of the “classics”). Instead, the Lampin has been all-but forgotten. Or so I thought.

supreme-x-vans-lampin-preview-1Much to my surprise, in doing a little research for this piece, I discovered that Vans hadn’t forgotten the Lampin completely. The company teamed up with fashion outlet Supreme last year to re-issue a new set of Lampins. But they’re pretty garish and there’s something not quite so appealing about the silhouette that I can’t quite put my finger on. Not sure how well they sold, but I certainly haven’t see anybody wearing them.

Anyway, into month three of the challenge, got enough trainers (mix of my own and loaners) to keep me going to mid March. More donations yesterday (many, many thanks!) took me well past the £500 mark. It’s all good!

The mammoth’s called Arthur, by the way. Say hello to Arthur.

See you tomorrow!

Usual sign-off:

Current total: £520 (thanks Rhian and Steve!)
