No, Mr Bond, I expect you to tie your laces…
Bond and beyond! With a red, white and blue pair of Puma runners to wear for the charity challenge today, I came over all patriotic and decided an 007 theme was in order.
One of the longest running arguments on SFX is whether James Bond counts as science fiction or not. Short answer is, “Yes! Of course” Some of the films are unquestionably sci-fi – You Only Live Twice, Moonraker – while many others have gadgets that nudge them into sci-fi territory… erm, sorry, I’m going to have to mention the invisible car in Die Another Day.
Okay, the franchise has been more superficially realistic since Daniel Craig convinced us all that a blond Bond could cut the mustard, but come on – there were moments on Goldeneye that bordered on sci-fantasy, not the least of which was the “reveal” of Raoul Silva’s true face. How Batman villain was that?
Actually, there’s a whole other argument about Batman. He’s not superpowered, so does he count as SFX territory? Some people reckon not. These people juts like to argue for the sake of arguing. If you live in the same universe as Superman and hobnob with Wonder Woman (the main reason he wears the cowl is so she can’t see where his eyes are looking), you’re sci-fi, dude.
Same with Bond. Even in his most grounded adventures – let’s say Casino Royale, Craig version – he still inhabits the same universe as giant space lasers, even if they’re off stage.
Anyway, here’s a better look at today’s trainers in all their patriotic glory. See you tomorrow. And newbies (I got a lot of you yesterday… oh the power of the Whedonverse) don’t forget that a fiver donation would be very much appreciated by Alzheimer’s Research UK.
