Adidas, cactus and Audrey too…
One hundred days to go. Whoooo-hooooo. And I celebrate that landmark with a (very hastily thrown together) tribute to Little Shop Of Horrors, featuring the mean green mother from outer space, Audrey 2, when he/she was still a quite cute little sapling. I say he/she because it’s always bothered me that the killer plant is called Audrey 2 but has the very male voice soul singer of Levi Stubbs – but hey, what’s wrong with having a transexual pot plant in a musical horror film? Groundbreaking, that’s what it was – groundbreaking.
And funny. Which is really the point.
If you have any love for the film, or the process of filmmaking, then I seriously recommend the Blu-ray with the alternate, original ending. In case you didn’t know, the film originally ended very bleakly, with Audrey (1) being fed to Audrey 2, and then the killer planet sporing into numerous Audrey 2, all of which grow to Godzilla proportions and proceed to destroy New York city.
It’s a 23 minute-sequence, that cost multi millions to make, and it looks spectacular – good old models and animatronics at their height before the CG revolution.
But it was cut, because previews audiences hated it. And for once, I have to agree with them. It’s a real downer of en ending. I don’t have a downer on downer endings as a rule, but this one really grates with the tone of the rest of the film. On the other hand, the film didn’t do spectacularly at the box office with the new happy ending either, so they may as well have kept it.
But it is fascinating to compare and contrast the two endings, especially as the this wasn’t just a case of minor re-editing. The film diverges drastically at one precise point, and it’s a bit like watching a time traveler going back in time to change history and create an alternate timeline.
