Day 364: Thunderbird Two Days To Go

Squash and go…

December 30 main

The penultimate day, and the brilliant sunshine sees me out on the bike again, making the most of this gorgeous day. Thunderbird 2 looks great in the cloudless skies.

I’ve also managed to write a feature for the SFX website today which I actually enjoyed researching. Not sure when it’s going to be posted but considering the nature of the piece (ten best sci-fi and fantasy moments of 2014) I’m guessing pretty soon. Any guesses what I might have included. I’ll give you one clue: one is from a show I don’t watch, but Jayne Nelson recommended it so I watched the episode in question, and had to agree with her; it’s a classic moment.

Tomorrow I’ll be doing my Sole Of Sci-Fi review of the year. As of this moment, I’m not entirely sure what that’ll entail, but it’ll be great. And I have some great trainers to mark the end of the challenge. Today’s are the last loan pair (some squash shoes from a brand I’ve never heard of ) from Richard Edwards; tomorrow’s are mine and bring everything full circle.

See you tomorrow.

Day 195: Absolutely FABulous

International Rescue comes to the aid of come ducks in a local pond…

July 14 May

I don’t live in a yellow submarine and I don’t know anybody who does. I once knew someone who lived in a green barge, which always looked like it might inadvertently turn into a submarine at any moment (it was so rickety it could have been torpedoed by a particularly determined trout).

One thing I’ve never know for sure, though, is if it was Thunderbird 4 that inspired the Beatles song. After all, Thunderbirds premiered in 1965 and “Yellow Submarine” was released in 1966. Admittedly, McCartney has never mentioned Thunderbirds as an inspiration, but it could have been subliminal. I’d like to think so anyway.

Not that living in Thunderbird 4 would be much fun. It’s a bit pokey and it spends most of its time locked away inside one of Thunderbird 2’s pods. It’d be like living in a caravan parked inside a garage. Gordon always came across as the dullest of the Thunderbird pilots as well; a wetter version of ’60s Dick Grayson. Scott and Virgil were the ones you’d like to share a pint with down the pub while Gordon arranged his sock drawers. Admittedly, on the surface John came across and the most stiff, formal and taciturn Tracy, but he did spend most of his time stuck alone on a space station, so you can forgive him for being a bit weird, and I always assumed his demeanour was masking some interesting deep dark side to his nature; maybe he wrote Steed and Mrs Peel slash fiction.

July 14 sideToday’s trainers are a bit of an oddity (and not just because the guy who provided them also sent a free pair of shorts…). They’re Adidas sort-of-Superstars with uppers mostly made from a hemp-like material. Now, hemp usually means the trainers are being marketed as “veggie-friendly” but these also have suede patches as well, so that blows that theory.

July 14 heelThey also have a funky zig-zag design on the heel, which really reminds me of something, but I can’t quite put my finger on it… They’re really comfy as well.

Had a huge number of new followers on Twitter yesterday, but no new donations. So, if you’re a newbie to this blog, please please, please support what I’m doing this all for and sponsor me for a fiver! I need a reason to carry on!

Also getting low on trainers again, so footwear donations (or loans) will be gratefully received too!

Actually got to do some real work today. And it’s going to be really sunny outside. Must not get distracted… Must not get distracted…

See you tomorrow.

Day 102: Great Scotts!

Cyclops doesn’t like today’s trainers. Strange. They share his name…

April 12 main 3

Scott Vs Scott. Or maybe Cyclops Vs Cyclers. Or maybe X-Man Vs BMX-Man. Okay, it’s getting really tenuous now.

Regular readers of this blog will know I’m no great fan of cycling shoes, but these are an exception. What I really don’t like are the shiny, three-Velcro-strapped, over-the-top, plasticky cycling shoes that make it look like you’ve got a couple of R2 units strapped to your feet.

These are different. They look like skate shoes and I think they look the business. But they are proper cycling shoes; the soles (and the sound you make when walking, like a drunk tap dancer) prove it; they have cleats.

The brand is Scott, who make some of my favourite cycling wear. A shame they’re size eights, because they’re really tight on me. Besides, by the rules of this challenge, I can’t keep trainers that I haven’t personally bought, and these were from the Future cycling mag’s free box.

By complete coincidence, I accepted a freelance commission yesterday to write about Teen Wolf series three, which stars a character called Scott. So here, for no better reason than to fill up the blog on a weekend when I’m not up to much other than work, are science fiction’s greatest fictional Scotts (so apologies for not including the non-fictional  but totally awesome Scott Bakula but no apologies for not including notorious bigot Orson Scott Card).

Thinking about Teen Wolf also reminded me of this: one of the oddest moments in an interview I’ve conducted ever. Enjoy…
